Thursday 22nd Mar.2012 – ski *** and walk ***** sunny

The skiing etc is beginning to take its toll on our poor old legs :( so our plan was to be on the first lift to make the most of the best pisted snow and then come home for lunch. All this was achieved and we were skiing down our first runs before 9:30 :) the only problem being the poor condition of the runs now that all the fresh snow has gone leaving an icy, bumpy base and not much fun to ski :( We again covered all three ski villages and we did find patches of good snow as the temperature rose. The cloud then came over and it was breezy at the top so we decided to call it a day but not before we acted like a couple of kids and had a run down on the boarder and ski cross runs which was great fun :) We made it to the Sherpa at mid day for bread then back to the apartment to pack a picnic and after a short rest we donned our walking boots and with ski poles in hand we set off for the Lac at 1:15. What an adventure we had although we only covered 3 to 4 miles we were out for four hours and this was some serious mountain walking, up steep narrow paths several feet deep in snow following the signed way and the tracks of long lines of snow shoers that passed us on the way
up !!! We really could have done with some snow shoes but managed okay in walking boots and only disappeared up to our knees a few times!!! We stopped for our picnic by a small snowy waterfall surrounded by lovely green pines and a deep blue sky – perfect :) We made it the small Lac Achard but not before and enthusiastic French lady snow shoer insisted on taking several pics of us!!! I stood on the frozen Lac and then we set off on the trek down, a different way to the way we came. We took our binoculars but birds were few and far between but we have added to our list today with Ring Ouzel and a Nut Cracker :) So another top day even though the skiing was far from perfect the walk was amazing you had to pinch yourself that you were there!!! That’s all for now, a hot bath awaits to soak my weary limbs!!!
